Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has called it a "mistake" to contest against one's family member. This comes after he made his wife Sunetra contest against his cousin Supriya Sule in Baramati Lok Sabha constituency.

The remarks, made at a public gathering in Gadchiroli on Sunday (8 September), were meant to urge Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Bhagyashri to not contest against her father.

Bhagyashri is planning to switch sides and join Ajit's uncle Sharad Pawar's NCP faction to contest in Aheri against her father Aatram Dharamraobaba Bhagwantrao in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections.

Aatram is currently a minister in Maharashtra and has won the assembly elections from Aheri multiple times on different party tickets. However, he is likely to be challenged by his own daughter this time.

"I want to tell you that even now, do not make this mistake. Stay with your father. No one can love his daughter as much as a father does. By doing this, you will create a rift in your own house," Ajit Pawar said.

Asserting that such action is neither right nor acceptable to the society, Pawar added, "We have also gained experience in this context, and I have now understood my mistake and I accept it."

This comes a few days after Pawar conceded it was a mistake to field his wife against his cousin in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. "One shouldn't allow politics to enter homes. This shouldn't have happened," he expressed.
