Preneet Kaur, the wife of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday (14 March).

Kaur is a four-time Congress MP from Patiala and it is most likely that she will now get a BJP ticket from here for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

She won the Lok Sabha elections from Patiala in 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2019. She also served as a Minister of State for External Affairs in the Manmohan Singh government.

After losing the 2014 Lok Sabha elections to an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, she became an MLA from the Patiala Urban constituency.

Kaur was welcomed to the BJP by Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar and senior BJP leaders Arun Singh, Vinod Tawde, Tarun Chugh and Vijay Rupani.

After joining the BJP, Kaur expressed confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She praised Modi's policies and the Viksit Bharat programme.

Thanking PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda, she posted on X, "I have worked selflessly my whole life for the people of Punjab and the country and will continue to do so."
