President Droupadi Murmu presented the Bharat Ratna to four recipients in a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Saturday (30 March).
Former prime ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur, and agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan were posthumously conferred the highest civilian award.
The central government had announced five names for the Bharat Ratna this year, which also included BJP leader LK Advani.
However, the veteran BJP leader could not attend the ceremony due to illness. President Murmu is expected to present the award to Advani tomorrow (31 March) at his residence, India Today reported.
Former PM Charan Singh's award was received by his grandson and RLD chief Jayant Singh, and P V Narasimha Rao's award was received by his son, P V Prabhakar Rao.
M S Swaminathan's daughter, Nitya Rao, received the award for her father and Karpoori Thakur's award was received by his son, Ram Nath Thakur.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President JP Nadda, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge were among the leaders present on the occasion.
The Bharat Ratna, instituted in 1954, is awarded to individuals in recognition of exceptional service or performance of the highest order in any field.
