Punjab And Haryana High Court Order Opening Shambhu Order As Farmers' Protest Mellows Down

The Haryana government has been directed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to remove barricades at its Shambhu border with Punjab, Hindustan Times reported.

The order came from a bench of justices GS Sandhawalia and Vikas Bahl, who were hearing petitions related to the farmers' protests on Wednesday (10 July).

The border was closed because a group of farmers had been camping there since 13 February to resume their protest march to Delhi. However, since only 400-450 farmers were left, the court found it safe to open the border.

The court noted that the barricades are "causing great inconvenience to the general public." It asked the security agencies to maintain the law and order after the opening of the border.

The Punjab government has been asked to cooperate with its Haryana counterpart, while the protesting farmers have been asked to ensure that no untoward incident happens.

Meanwhile, another border named Khanauri near Jind is also closed but no order has been passed for it. In February, violence broke out at this border with security personnel sustaining injuries and one protestor dying.
