Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested Adil Manzoor Langoo, accused of killing two Punjabi workers in Srinagar last week, IGP Kashmir VK Birdi informed media on Tuesday (13 February).
Langoo is a resident of Srinagar and was arrested on the basis of "clinching evidence." Birdi said that he was in contact with his handler in Pakistan and has impressed upon him to do some terror attack in Srinagar.
The police said that the weapon of offence was provided to the accused by his Pakistani handler and has been recovered now. The police hope to file a charge sheet in the case soon for judicial determination.
On 7 February, Amritpal Singh and Rohit Masih were attacked while returning to their house in Shaheed Ganj. They hailed from Punjab and worked as carpenters there.
Singh was shot at point-blank range and succumbed to his injuries on the spot, whereas Mashi died while receiving treatment at Srinagar Hospital. This marked the first terrorist attack on non-locals in Kashmir this year.
After the incident, an FIR was filed under various sections including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Srinagar Police conducted Field and Technical Analysis and formed a list of suspects.
After inquiry, Langoo was found to be the main culprit in the killing. DIG Central Kashmir has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conclude the investigation.
