Putin Agrees To Discharge Indians Tricked Into Joining Russian Army After PM Modi's Request: Report

Russia has agreed to discharge all Indians working in the Russian army following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's discussion with President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Moscow.

This decision comes after reports of at least two Indian nationals dying while fighting in Russia's war against Ukraine and many others claiming they were deceived into joining the conflict.

PM Modi, currently on a two-day visit to Moscow, addressed the issue during a private dinner hosted by Putin last evening.

Russia agreed to discharge all Indians serving in their army and facilitate their return, NDTV reported citing sources.

Additionally, Putin congratulated Modi on his re-election for a third term and praised the growing stature of the Indian economy.

According to reports, nearly two dozen Indians were coerced into fighting in Ukraine after being misled by agents promising lucrative jobs.

A viral video earlier this year showed a group of men from Punjab and Haryana, dressed in army uniforms, alleging they were duped into participating in the conflict and pleading for assistance.

In March, the government said they had "strongly" taken up the matter with Russian authorities for their early discharge.

"Strong action has been initiated against agents and unscrupulous elements who recruited them on false pretexts and promises," they said.

Indian investigative agencies have since conducted raids and dismantled a trafficking ring involved in sending Indians to Russia.

During these operations, it was discovered that at least 35 Indians were trafficked, though it remains unclear if all were compelled to fight in the war.
