Amid ongoing protests in the House, the Rajya Sabha has taken up the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023 for consideration and passing.
Originally introduced in the Lok Sabha on 24 July 2023, the Bill aims to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Caste) Order, 1950, specifically in relation to Chhattisgarh.
Its purpose is to include Mahara and Mahra as synonyms for the Mehra, Mahar, and Mehar communities in Chhattisgarh.
The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order provides a list of castes and tribes that are recognised as scheduled castes in various states and union territories.
The Vice President and chairman of the house, Jagdeep Dhankhar, repeatedly requested for silence as members of the Opposition gathered in the center of the House.
Due to the ongoing commotion, the House was adjourned till 2:45pm. As the Rajya Sabha reconvened at 2:45pm , the protests persisted.
The chair acknowledged the earlier events and pledged to take necessary actions to ensure the smooth continuation of proceedings.
Consequently, the House was adjourned until 3:15pm.
