Resort-Cracy: Amid Shifting Speculations Over New Jharkhand CM, JMM Mulls Shifting Its Alliance MLAs To Hyderabad

A day after the resignation and subsequent arrest of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the ruling alliance legislators, including those from Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress, gathered at the state guest house in Ranchi on 1 February 2024.

As reported by The Hindu, sources indicate a possible move to shift these legislators to Hyderabad to avoid external pressures.

Chartered planes have reportedly landed at Ranchi airport, awaiting orders to transport the alliance MLAs to Hyderabad.

The move is seen as a precautionary measure amid the evolving political scenario in the state.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan has agreed to meet JMM legislature party leader Champai Soren at Raj Bhavan at 5 pm, along with four other leaders from the alliance.

Champai Soren, with the support of 47 MLAs, including 16 Congress members and the lone RJD representative, was elected as the chief minister on 31 January.

The move came as it became apparent that Hemant Soren would face arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.

In light of these developments, State Congress chief Rajesh Thakur expressed concern over the delay in extending an invitation from Raj Bhawan and indicated that legislators might fly to Hyderabad if the delay persists.

Who Is Champai Soren?

Champai Soren, aged 68, is a six-term MLA representing Seraikela (ST reserve) constituency in Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

Soren entered the Bihar assembly for the first time as an independent legislator in 1991 and has since retained the seat, except for a loss in 2000 to Anantram Tudu of BJP.

Champai joined the JMM and won the seat in the 1995 assembly polls. Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in 2000.

After his defeat in 2000, he has clinched victory in all subsequent polls held in 2005, 2009, 2014, and 2019.
