The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought permission from the Sealdah court to conduct a narco-analysis test on the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder accused Sanjay Roy.
Last month, the central investigative agency conducted a polygraph test on Roy and found that his claim to innocence in the rape and murder case of the 31-year-old trainee doctor is "false and unconvincing."
The CBI now wants to conduct the narco-analysis test to cross-check his claims. "This is primarily to cross-check whether Roy is telling the truth. The narco analysis test will help us to verify his version," an officer told PTI.
During a narco analysis test, the subject is injected with sodium pentothal, a drug that induces a hypnotic state. This suppresses the subject's imagination increasing the possibility of truthful responses.
Roy, a civic worker, is accused of raping and murdering the second-year postgraduate doctor after which, her dead body was found in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The accused was caught based on CCTV footage showing him going inside the seminar hall. His Bluetooth headset was also found at the crime scene. He has a history of domestic violence and failed marriages.
Roy was first questioned by the Kolkata Police and then by the CBI when the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the central agency. However, the victim's parents suspect the involvement of more people.
Meanwhile, junior doctors are continuing their protests and have not reported back to work despite the Supreme Court's ultimatum. Their discussion with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also pending.
