Starting Monday, the Chief Justice of India and two other senior-most judges of the court will hear Public Interest Litigations (PILs) as assigned by the CJI, according to the new roster of work released by the Supreme Court.
Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, along with Justices S K Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna, will head the benches that will hear the PILs.
The SC Registry has announced that the "roster of the work for fresh cases notified under the order of the...Chief Justice of India" will come into effect from July 3, 2023 (Monday). The CJI's bench will also handle social justice matters, letter petitions, appointments of constitutional functionaries, and cases related to various other subjects.
The first three benches, along with the fourth most-senior judge Justice B R Gavai, will be responsible for hearing contempt of court matters. Additionally, the benches headed by the CJI and Justice Surya Kant will address habeas corpus petitions.
The CJI bench will hear election matters, while Justices Surya Kant and Aniruddha Bose will preside over them.
