While the debate on whether the Sengol indeed symbolised the transfer of power goes on, a section from the 2021-22 policy note of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HRCE) ministry is going viral on social media because it says the following-
“At the time of enthronement, the traditional guru or the preceptor of the King would handover the ceremonial Scepter to the new ruler. Following this tradition when the Oduvars completed the singing of the last line of “11th stanza” from Kolaru Pathigam, Thevaram,
“அடியார்கள் வானில் அரசாள்வர் ஆணை நமதே...”
Thiruvavaduthurai Aadheenam Thambiran Swamigal handed over the goldplated silver scepter to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This signified the transfer of power from the British Governor-General Lord Mountbatten to the first Prime Minister of India.”
This entry containing the words, ‘signified the transfer of power’, is listed as point number 24 on page number 27 of the above mentioned document. It is under the heading ‘Head of Mutts as Royal Counsel.’
