In a pivotal decision, the Supreme Court has affirmed the abrogation of article 370 and underscored the prompt reinstatement of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
Led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, the court also directed the Election Commission to conduct elections in the region by 30 September, 2024.
However, as per reports by Livemint, during the hearing, the court cautioned petitioners against challenging every decision made by the Union government on behalf of the state, emphasising that such challenges could disrupt regular administrative functioning.
Rejecting arguments about irreversible decisions during President's rule, the court clarified that article 370's purpose for the complete national integration of Jammu and Kashmir had been fulfilled.
The Supreme Court's ruling not only settles the long-standing debate over article 370 but also outlines a clear roadmap for the future governance and political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, emphasising the need for expeditious action.
