Tamil director Mohan G has been arrested by Trichy Police's cyber-crime unit for alleging that a medicine causing impotency in men was mixed with panchamritham (a religious offering) at the Palani temple.
The remarks come at a time when Hindus across the nation have been deeply hurt by alleged findings of animal fat including beef tallow in the ghee used to make laddus at Tirumal Tirupati temple.
Known for films like Draupathi and Bagasuran, Mohan G made the claim during a YouTube interview while discussing the Tirupati laddus row and drew a similarity with Tamil Nadu temples.
He alleged that the news claiming such adulteration at the Palani temple was hidden and no proper explanation was given. "Those working there told me that birth control pills were an attack on Hindus," he added.
His comments have sparked a backlash, and Tamil Nadu's Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister, Sekar Babu, warned of action against those spreading false information, India Today reported.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Ashwathaman condemned the arrest as unconstitutional and alleged that no formal information was given to the family regarding the arrest, which is against the Supreme Court order.
