Three Major Focus Areas For Indian Foreign Policy As S Jaishankar Takes Charge Of External Affairs Ministry For Second Time Under Modi 3.0

Recently re-appointed External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has outlined India's foreign policy agenda for the third term of the BJP-led NDA Government.

Jaishankar, who has been at the forefront of India's assertive foreign policy has began his second consecutive term in the South Block.

Here are the three major focus areas according to EAM Jaishankar to be taken up during his second tenure in the south block.

1. China and Pakistan

Speaking to reporters, S Jaishankar stated, "Our focus with China will be on resolving the ongoing border issues. With Pakistan, we aim to address the problem of persistent cross-border terrorism and find a solution that prevents it from being a policy."

"Regarding Pakistan and China, our relations and the problems with each country are distinct," he added.

Following the swearing-in of the Council of Ministers, Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sharif acknowledged the BJP's electoral success as a reflection of public confidence in Modi's leadership, urging a shift from animosity to hope to shape South Asia's future positively.

Modi responded by highlighting India's commitment to peace, security, and progressive ideas, and underscored that countering terrorism remains a top priority.

2. UNSC

Regarding India's bid for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Jaishankar has noted that while there is global support for India's seat, significant effort is required.

He reiterated PM Modi's guiding principles of "Bharat First" and "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," expressing optimism that these will position India as a global friend.

He noted India's increasing global influence, with other countries recognising India as a reliable ally, especially in times of crisis.

3. Other immediate priorities

Other immediate priorities for Jaishankar include deciding on India's participation in the Swiss-hosted peace conference on 15-16 June and preparing for the G7 summit in Italy, where PM Modi will present India's priorities and concerns.

He acknowledged the challenging global landscape marked by the Russia-Ukraine war and conflicts in West Asia and suggested that India's trusted position and growing prestige will advance national interests.

Jaishankar also expressed confidence that the foreign policy during Modi's third term will be highly successful under PM Modi's leadership.

He will be supported by Pabitra Margherita and Kirti Vardhan Singh as Ministers of State.
