A student of class 10, Devraj died on Monday (19 August) evening after he was stabbed by his fellow classmate Ayan Sheikh in Udaipur's higher secondary government school.

After the stabbing incident on Friday, the situation became tense in the Rajasthan city as both students belonged to different communities.

There was arson and vandalism and the shops were closed as the Hindus protested against the attack. The accused's father was soon arrested by the police.

The knife attack is said to have happened after a minor dispute after the lunch break, in which Devraj sustained injuries in his arteries, disrupting blood circulation.

He received treatment at Udaipur's Maharana Bhupal hospital where he died hours after his sister and cousins tied Rakhi on his wrist on the occasion of Rakshabandhan.

The city again became tense after Devraj's death and the police imposed Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Samhita and shut down the internet services to prevent any violence.

The body of the victim was handed over to the family after the post-mortem. The cremation was scheduled to be done on Tuesday morning.

Bulldozer action was taken against the accused's house, as has been the norm under the state governments of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It was alleged that the house was built on forest land.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma had also sent a team of specialised doctors from Jaipur to take care of the child but he succumbed to his injuries before the team could do its work.

Heavy police force remains to be deployed in the area. The District Collector, Superintendent of Police and other senior officers are monitoring the situation in the city.

The stabbing incident happened two years after a tailor named Kanhaiya Lal was beheaded in Udaipur by Islamic fundamentalists for his post supporting BJP leader Nupur Sharma.
