The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to assess the damages caused by recent heavy rainfall and floods in Gujarat.

The team will be led by the Executive Director of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and is expected to visit the flood-affected districts shortly, according to a Home Ministry statement on Sunday (1 September).

Gujarat experienced severe weather conditions from 25 August to 30 August due to a deep depression that formed over Rajasthan and Gujarat, leading to heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

The neighboring states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan also suffered from heavy rainfall during this period.

Additionally, Himachal Pradesh has faced significant challenges this year due to various spells of heavy rainfall, cloudbursts, and landslides.

The Home Ministry said that it has been in regular contact with senior officials from these states and is prepared to dispatch IMCTs there as well, if severe damages are reported by the state governments.

The ministry further added that this monsoon season has seen several states grappling with natural disasters, including floods, cloudbursts, and landslides.

"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Centre government is fully committed to provide all possible help to affected states," the MHA said.

Earlier, the IMCT used to visit the disaster affected states only after the receipt of memorandum from the state government, the MHA said.

"As per the significant decision taken by the Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, in August 2019, during this year, MHA has constituted IMCTs which have visited the flood/ landslides affected States of Assam, Kerala, Mizoram, and Tripura in advance for on the spot assessment of the damages, without waiting for their Memorandum," it added.

IMCT for Nagaland has also been constituted, which will visit the affected areas of the state shortly, it added.
