In a shocking incident, a man residing in Saudi Arabia pronounced triple talaq to his wife in Kanpur during a video call, reportedly due to her decision to shape her eyebrows against his wishes.
The woman, identified as Gulsaba, has filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the Kanpur police, and the case is currently under investigation.
The incident unfolded on 4 October but only came to light recently when Gulsaba approached the police again, expressing her concern that no action had been taken regarding her complaint.
As reported by The Times Of India, Gulsaba had been married to Mohammad Salim of Phulpur, Prayagraj, for approximately a year. Salim, who had left for Saudi Arabia to work with a private firm, allegedly grew increasingly orthodox, and differences began to emerge in their relationship.
Gulsaba initially resided with Salim's parents but later shifted to her parents' house, alleging harassment for dowry from her in-laws. The situation reportedly worsened after Salim's departure to Saudi Arabia.
The victim's complaint to the police highlighted her husband's objections to her fashionable choices. On 4 October, during a video call, Salim noticed his wife's shaped eyebrows and confronted her for altering her appearance without his consent.
In a fit of anger, he pronounced triple talaq, effectively ending their marriage and allowing her to live her life as she saw fit.
Subsequently, Gulsaba lodged a police complaint against her husband, mother-in-law, and four others involved in the incident.
As a result, Mohammad Salim has been booked under multiple charges, including IPC section 498A (cruelty against wife), sections of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act-2019, and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
