Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse: Drilling Progresses To 21 Metres, Vital Supplies Being Funneled To 40 Trapped Workers Through Pipes

In a determined effort to rescue 40 trapped laborers after the tunnel collapse on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri national highway, drilling operations have made significant headway.

The under-construction tunnel between Silkyara and Dandalgaon in Uttarkashi district faced a devastating collapse, leaving workers stranded for five days.

Overnight endeavors have successfully drilled up to 21 metres through the rubble in the Silkyara tunnel, showcasing notable progress in the ongoing rescue mission.

To establish an escape route, rescue workers aim to drill up to 60 metres, sequentially inserting 800 mm and 900 mm diameter pipes with the assistance of a massive drill machine, according to NHIDCL Director Anshu Manish Khalkho and reported by Deccan Herald.

The trapped laborers are receiving essential supplies, including oxygen, medicines, food, and water through pipes, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Uttarkashi District Magistrate Abhishek Ruhela assured that constant communication is upheld to boost their morale.

The collapse, triggered by a landslide on Sunday (12 November) morning, led to debris accumulation approximately 270 metres from the tunnel's mouth at the Silkyara side.
