Uttarakhand Tunnel Rescue: Thai Cave Experts Consulted, Operation May Extend To Two-Three Days, Says Union Minister V K Singh

As the challenging rescue operation to evacuate 40 labourers trapped in a tunnel in Uttarakhand enters its fifth day, Union Minister V K Singh, who visited the site, expressed optimism but cautioned that it may take two-three days for the task to be completed.

The minister highlighted the government's commitment to prioritising the safety of the trapped workers and assured that all possible efforts are being made for a swift rescue.

Speaking at a press conference at the site, Singh stated, "Our priority is to ensure the trapped workers are safe and are rescued at the earliest. Everyone, from the Prime Minister to the chief minister, is helping in every way they can. We faced some problems with the machine that was being used earlier, and a faster, more powerful machine has now been deployed."

Acknowledging the challenges, Singh mentioned that while the rescue could be completed sooner, they are keeping two-three days as the outer limit to account for unexpected difficulties.

He emphasised that all suggestions, including those from foreign experts, are being considered in the ongoing rescue efforts.

Notably, a faster and more powerful 'American auger' machine has been introduced at the Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarkashi, enhancing the rescue operation's efficiency.

Singh confirmed that the rescue teams have engaged with foreign experts, including a firm that played a crucial role in saving individuals trapped in a cave in Thailand in 2018.

NDTV reported that the rescue teams have reached out to a company from Thailand and are seeking guidance from the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute to address the complexities of the operation inside the tunnel.
