Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav addressed a public gathering in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal on Sunday (28 April) and targeted the "poor quality" of smartphones distributed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Yadav recalled the distribution of laptops, when he was UP Chief Minister from 2012 to 2017 and said, "We distributed laptops, that is still working. When you switch on that laptop, you see Netaji (Mulayam Yadav) and us."
Notably, unchangeable image of the SP leaders as the distributed laptops' wallpaper was one of the point of criticisms. However, Yadav highlighted this as a point of appreciation.
"BJP copied us but have smartphones instead of laptops. Their quality is so bad that you keep scrolling but they don't work," Yadav said adding about Bill Gates's latest visit to New Delhi when he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Bill Gates said that the digital divide-the distance between rich and poor has increased and through technology, it needs to be reduced. We are glad that we distributed free laptops, today big cities in America are providing free laptops to their poor people," Yadav said.
"For the betterment of life, from government schemes to your aid, if we have to give Aata (wheat) and data free, then we will definitely do that," Yadav said appealing to vote for SP in the Lok Sabha elections.
