West Bengal Post-Poll Violence: Muslim BJP Worker Killed By 'Men Wearing Khaki', Amit Malviya Slams Trinamool Congress

A BJP worker named Hafizur Sheikh was killed by unknown assailants in the Nadia district of West Bengal on Saturday (1 June) evening, soon after the voting for the final phase of Lok Sabha elections concluded.

The area falls under Krishnanagar constituency, which voted on 13 May and witnessed a contest between expelled Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra and Rajmata Amrita Roy.

The 35-year-old worker was in CPI(M) earlier and had joined the BJP ahead of the elections. He was a resident of Pacha Chandpur in Kaliganj and is survived by his wife and children.

According to local sources cited by The Indian Express, the attack happened when Sheikh was playing carrom with his neighbours. Unidentified men started firing and the bullets hit Sheikh.

Despite this, the attackers beat Sheikh further to ensure death. Some of the attackers allegedly wore khaki uniforms and reportedly pretended to be police personnel.

The police denied allegations of any involvement in the attack, while victim's kin alleged police inaction, as Sheikh's elder brother Suku said, "The police knew everything but did nothing.”

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya alleged that since minorities in the area joined the party under Sheikh's leadership before the Lok Sabha election, the ruling TMC took revenge.

"TMC has no love lost for Muslims, if they do not vote for them. Muslims were targeted in Diamond Harbour too, where a large number of them voted for Pratikur Rehman, the CPI(M) candidate," he added.

However, the police claimed that there was no politics involved in the attack, but Sheikh was killed due to personal enmity. Police is making efforts to nab the assailants.
