In light of the recent incident of eve-teasing in Lucknow's Gomti Nagar and the rape of a minor girl in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has brought the focus on women's safety in the state again.

After committing in Vidhan Sabha last week that women's safety is the top priority of his government, Adityanath on Wednesday (7 August) ordered the reactivation of the Anti-Romeo squad teams.

Anti-Romeo squads were formed in 2017 when Adityanath came to power for the first time in UP. The activity of the Anti-Romeo squads increased manifolds in 2022 after Adityanath came to power again.

The main purpose of these squads is to stop eve-teasing and ensure women's safety. A squad consists of a police sub-inspector and at least two constables including a woman.

They patrol places like universities, colleges, cinema halls, parks and other public spaces which are viewed as vulnerable for women. They give warnings first and arrest repeat offenders.

Apart from the reactivation of Anti-Romeo squads, the UP CM also instructed the display of the list of top 10 criminals in the district in police stations., during his visit to Ambedkar Nagar.

Notably, Adityanath had suspended the complete staff of the police station including the inspector after the Gomti Nagar incident and transferred. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Additional SP and DCP.
