Amit Shah Fact-Checks Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's Claim That Congress' Women Reservation Bill Is Still Active

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed parliament that Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women Reservation Bill) will be tabled by the government, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury tried claiming the credit for it.

"Women reservation was brought by PM Rajiv Gandhi in local body elections. Since then, Congress has been trying to bring law to give one-third reservation to women in Lok Sabha and legislative assemblies," he said.

"It used to sometimes get passed in Lok Sabha, but failed in Rajya Sabha and vice-versa. The bill brought by the Manmohan government is still active," Chowdhury claimed.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah quickly fact-checked this claim stating that the Women Reservation Bill was never before passed by the Lok Sabha.

He highlighted that Chowdhury's other statement is also false because "If a bill is passed in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha doesn't pass it, the bill gets lapsed itself after the Lok Sabha is dissolved."

Shah said that Chowdhury should correct the factually incorrect things he said, otherwise prove them correct. He sought clarification from the Congress leader.
