After a video emerged from Manipur showing the sexual assault of two women from the Kuki-Zomi community, four individuals, including the main suspect Huirem Herodas Meitei, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Herodas is a 32-year-old man hailing from Pechi Awang Leikai and was arrested early morning on Thursday (20 July) in an operation by the Manipur Police.
Upon receiving news of Herodas' arrest, the women of his own village gathered and, after a brief discussion, marched towards the accused's residence. As a united force, they vandalized the house and eventually set it ablaze.
Expressing their collective stance, a Meira Paibi leader stated, "Regardless of whether it's Meitei or any other community, as women, we cannot tolerate the violation of a woman's dignity. We cannot permit such individuals to exist in our society. It brings shame to the entire Meitei community."
Herodas was seen in the viral video. The incident had taken place in B Phainom village on 4 May. He has been booked under the charges of rape and murder.
