In the Mewat region of Deeg district in Rajasthan, cattle smugglers fired on the police, when the latter attempted to intercept the former on Thursday (21 September).

Rajasthan Police were trying to rescue the cows when the smugglers initiated gunfire and fled the scene. The incident occurred in the village of Kanwari, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Pahadi Police Station.

After receiving confidential information that five smugglers were carrying cattle in a mini truck, the police from the Pahadi Police Station promptly arrived at the scene. Circle Officer Giriraj Prasad Meena led the police operation.

However, upon spotting the police, the cattle smugglers began firing gunshots and made their escape through the fields and hilly terrain, Live Hindustan reported.

The Mewat region is notorious for cattle theft. The cattle smugglers transport the cows to neighboring Haryana. Prior to this incident, an encounter between the police and cattle smugglers took place in Dausa on 16 September. In that encounter, the police apprehended three cattle rustlers.

The police have initiated a search operation to locate the fugitive cattle smugglers. A case has been registered against five suspects from Kanwari village, including one identified as Kada alias Kasim Mev. The Circle Officer stated that the search operation is ongoing.
