Centre Notifies Regulations For Empanelment Of Arbitrators In The India International Arbitration Centre

On Friday, the 31 March, 2023, the central government notified the India International Arbitration Centre (Criteria for admission to the panel of arbitrators) Regulations, 2023.

The Chamber of Arbitration, which will consist of experienced and reputable arbitration practitioners at the national and international level, will empanel arbitrators for a maximum period of five years.

The chamber will appoint its members for two years, with a provision for re-appointment.

Persons proficient and willing to serve as arbitrators for either domestic or international arbitration or both, subject to their expertise and experience, will be empanelled by the chamber.

Those with appropriate experience and expertise in arbitration can apply to be on the panel, which will be scrutinized by the Chamber of Arbitration.

The arbitrators will be empanelled based on certain criteria, such as their age, educational qualifications, experience in the field of arbitration, and absence of any criminal or disciplinary proceedings against them.

The Chamber may also invite eminent persons with specialized knowledge and substantial relevant experience in the field of arbitration for empanelment.

In another development, the India International Arbitration Centre has proposed the introduction of a time frame for day-to-day hearings and has invited suggestions and opinions from all stakeholders before the International Arbitration Centre (Conduct of Arbitration Proceedings) Regulations, 2023 are finalized and implemented.
