Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that we are now standing in the middle of "1,000 years of enslavement and 1,000 years of greatness" during his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He mentioned that whatever dreams we saw during those 1,000 years will now be completed pointing out that whatever decisions we take today will impact the next 1,000 years.
"There are various instances in history when an event seems small but has an everlasting impact. Like 1,000-1,200 years ago, a small kingdom was attacked but that single event pulled us into 1,000 years of enslavement," the PM said.
"We went on sinking into that enslavement. Whoever came, looted us, ruled us. It was such an hostile era," Modi continued saying.
"But I am mentioning this today because India's heroes always kept the fire of freedom lit. Even the most ordinary person kept on wishing for freedom. Women, villagers, labourers, all made efforts for freedom," the PM said.
"In 1947, the country became independent... after 1,000 years, we were free," Modi said.
