J&K: Protests At NIT Srinagar After Locals Students Accuse Batchmate Of Making Blasphemous Post

Protests broke out at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar on Tuesday, sparked by claims that a non-local student made a social media post, allegedly blasphemous towards prophet Muhammad

Following these allegations, the accused student was rusticated by the authorities at NIT.

The protests subsided after top officials of the institute assured action against the student and wrote to the police to initiate legal action against him.

A YouTube video allegedly featuring the alleged offensive remarks sparked protests on the university grounds.

Inspector General VK Birdi of the Kashmir Zone stated that the controversial video was not uploaded by the accused student, but rather by an unknown vlogger on a social media platform.

“Today evening at around 4.30, we received information that some students are protesting at the NIT campus (in Srinagar). After initial investigation, it came to the fore that a student had posted some video on social media. It was not his own post but he had taken it from YouTube,” IGP Birdi said, Indian Express reported.

"The protesting students alleged that a non-local student has posted something insulting against Prophet Muhammad on social media,” an institute official was quoted as saying by IE.

“This has hurt the sentiments of local Muslim students and they took to the streets demanding action against him. The top officials intervened and assured action against the erring student," the official added.

NIT-Srinagar had seen unrest in the past, notably in 2016 when clashes erupted between two groups over a cricket match. The dispute arose when students from outside Jammu and Kashmir took issue with the celebrations of a few local students after India lost to the West Indies.
