In what is being seen as a U-turn, CPI(M) state secretary MV Govindan today (4 August) said that he had never said that Lord Ganesha is a myth.
According to a report by Onmanorama, he said,“Believers have the right to believe in Ganapati or Allah. I didn't term Ganapati a myth or endorse Allah as a non-mythical concept."
In a press conference held a few days ago during which he answered questions regarding remarks made by Speaker AN Shamseer, when he was asked whether Lord Ganesha is a myth, he had replied, “Is ganapati science then? Let us look at myths as myths only. The formation of Kerala is also a myth, right? We are not against believers.”
He was then asked whether Allah was is a myth. He replied, "I didn't say all Gods are myths. Unlike Hindus, Muslims doesn't have 1000s of Gods. They believe in a higher concept single God!"

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Surendran said that while Govindan had changed his stance after the massive backlash from Hindus across the state, Shamseer should also apologise.
He added that the issue has found support from people cutting across party lines.
