India asked the Canadian High Commissioner for an explanation on how separatist and extremist elements breached security at its diplomatic mission and consulates, despite police presence.
Cameron MacKay was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday (25 March) following an incident in Surrey, British Columbia.
India's High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, was forced to cancel his appearance at a function due to the presence of violent protesters who were demanding the release of a fugitive.
The situation escalated when a journalist who was covering the protest was assaulted. Over 200 protesters were in attendance, some of whom were carrying weapons.
Canada was reminded to fulfill its duties under the Vienna Convention and to apprehend and try known perpetrators of related actions.
India summoned the diplomats of US, UK, and Canada for pro-Khalistan demonstrations.
In a statement, the MEA urged the Canadian Government to ensure the safety of its diplomats and security of its diplomatic premises. The Canadian Government is expected to take necessary measures to allow diplomats to carry out their functions.
