Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai, posted a video of a family that threatened to immolate itself because they had lost all hope of getting their land back due to the pressure tactics adopted by a brother of senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and former Union minister A Raja.

The incident happened in front of the Perambalur district collectorate. Raja belongs to the same district.

A lady seen in the video says that they were a group of five families that have been living there for 55 years after they had come from Ceylon. She added that since the time A Raja’s brother had grabbed their land, they had appointed three lawyers to argue their case but all the lawyers had been bought off and no government departments had helped them.

Raja has been previously accused of forcibly acquiring hundreds of acres of land from Dalits in the district at very low prices and then making a massive profit by selling it to tyre manufacturer MRF.

While they did not name Raja’s brother, it is alleged that they were speaking of A Kaliaperumal.

Kaliaperumal's recent appointment as the head of the Temple Trustee Board of Perambalur district by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HRCE) department has been opposed by the local BJP members and Hindu organisations because they suspect Raja's family to be crypto-Christians. Raja had also made controversial remarks about Hindus in the recent past.

Annamalai said that the DMK is the synonym for corruption and goondaism in Tamil Nadu.
