All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) organising secretary, C Ve Shanmugam has moved the Madras High Court asking it to ensure a free and fair election by giving suitable directions to the Election Commission.
In his affidavit submitted to the High Court, Shanmugam said that his party had found a lot of anomalies in the voter list when it undertook a door-to-door survey in the constituency and the Election Commission has not yet taken any steps in spite of the matter having been brought to its notice.
He said that of the 2,26,867 names on the voter list, 30,056 were of those not residing there. 7947 names were of people who had died and 1009 names had double entries.
Further, he said that his party fears that the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its allies may exploit these discrepancies to their advantage.
This comes after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner saying that the DMK was distributing cash and 2 kg of meat to bribe voters.
A few days back, election officials along with police seized tokens alleged to be used for cash distribution from DMK South Union treasurer Sarbudeen.
