Excise and Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji has filed four defamation cases against political commentator Savukku Shankar at the Saidapet court in Chennai today (15 May).
The petition was filed by advocates P Wilson and Richardson Wilson. It said that Shankar had defamed Balaji through various videos, interviews and posts on social media.
According to some political commentators, Shankar's comments saying that Balaji would bring down the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) regime similar to Eknath Shinde in Maharashtra and his statements regarding the functioning of the state-run TASMAC bars could be the reasons for the defamation cases filed against him.
In the past few days, Shankar has said that Balaji was building a Rs 300 crore house near Karur without proper permission.
In September 2022, the Madras High Court had sentenced Shankar to six months imprisonment for his remarks against the higher judiciary. The sentence was later suspended by the Supreme Court.
The defamation cases filed by Balaji come after Chief Minister MK Stalin and DMK treasurer TR Baalu recently filed similar cases against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president, K Annamalai for allegations made while presenting the DMK Files.
