Chief Minister MK Stalin has written a letter to Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution, Piyush Goyal, asking him to allocate 10000 MT of wheat and tur dal per month to Tamil Nadu to combat the rise in prices due to shortage.
In his letter, Chief Minister Stalin wrote that his government has been making efforts to procure these items from domestic as well as foreign suppliers in order to cool down prices.
Referring to inflation data from May 2023, which stated that the inflation in cereals was 12.65 per cent and 6.56 per cent in pulses, he wrote that in view of rising prices, the state government had been supplying food grains, vegetables and pulses through cooperative outlets and Uzhavar Sandhais (farmer's markets) at prices much below the market prices.
This letter comes days after he wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to increase the amount of copra purchased in the state under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) from 56000 MT to 90000 MT and extend the deadline till September.
