UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has dismissed Interior Minister Suella Braverman, a key member of his cabinet, according to a government source on Monday (13 november). This decision follows Braverman's comments last week criticising the police's management of a pro-Palestinian march, in defiance of Sunak.
Braverman's publication of an article condemning the police's handling of the Saturday march drew criticism, with opponents arguing that her position exacerbated tensions and fueled the involvement of right-wing protesters in London's streets. This situation increased pressure on Sunak to address the issue by taking action.
In an interview with Sky News, Armed Forces Minister James Heappey distanced himself from Suella Braverman's controversial remarks about the Metropolitan Police the previous week.
He emphasised the need to avoid excessive second-guessing of the police by politicians in the media, expressing a divergence from Braverman's stance. This sentiment echoed statements made by UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.
