Unconditional Apology: Supreme Court's Suggestion To Suspended AAP Leader Raghav Chadha

Supreme Court on Friday (3 November) recommended that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha should arrange a meeting with the Rajya Sabha Chairperson to request an unconditional apology following his suspension from the House.

The suspension resulted from accusations that the Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab had introduced a motion to refer the Delhi Services Bill to the select committee.

On 11 August, a voice vote in the Rajya Sabha approved a motion proposed by Leader of the House Piyush Goyal, which called for disciplinary action against the AAP leader.

This was in response to his inclusion of certain members of the Upper House in a proposed select committee for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, without their consent.

The Supreme Court also documented statements made by Chadha's legal representative, affirming that the MP had no intention to undermine the dignity of the House in which he holds membership. It was stated that he plans to request an appointment with the Rajya Sabha Chairperson to offer an unconditional apology.

The court also noted that the Chairperson might consider the apology with empathy, taking into account the unique facts and circumstances surrounding the House's affairs, IndiaTV reported.
