In a video posted on Twitter by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai, senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Minister KN Nehru can be heard telling Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan about using money and gifts to win the Erode East bypoll.
The conversation between the two of them happens while another leader is giving a speech.
Nehru said that money would be distributed by 31 January and polling officials would be gifted watches and given biryani to ensure that the election goes in favour of the DMK-led alliance. He also talks about travelling to Coimbatore and uses words like ‘settle’ and ‘set right.’
He can be heard mentioning the name of Excise and Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji and saying ‘Thalapathy in Chennai’, which was assumed by political commentators to be a reference to Chief Minister MK Stalin.

Reacting to the video, Annamalai said that this was proof that the DMK was pinning its hopes on winning the election with money power. He asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take cognisance.
Meanwhile, the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) of Seeman has announced Menaka Navaneethan as its candidate for the bypoll.
