Yogi Govt To Bring UP Lifts and Escalators Act In Winter Session After Recent Accidents, Here's What Bill Draft Says

One month following the tragic elevator crash in Greater Noida that claimed the lives of eight workers, the Uttar Pradesh government has concluded the drafting of a bill mandating the annual maintenance of elevators and compulsory insurance for users.

According to NDTV, the proposed legislation also necessitates the registration of lifts and includes provisions for penalising agencies for negligence in lift maintenance.

A senior government official stated that the draft bill is poised to undergo cabinet scrutiny before being presented in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly during the upcoming winter session.

Upon passage and receiving the governor's assent, the law will be officially known as the UP Lifts and Escalators Act 2023.

The fatal incident occurred when an elevator plummeted from the 14th floor of an under-construction tower at the Amrapali Dream Valley project site in Greater Noida (West) on 15 September, resulting in four immediate deaths and four succumbing to injuries later.

Recently, in a Ghaziabad society, an elevator experienced a free fall from the eighth floor to the basement, carrying a woman and her three-year-old son. Fortunately, both escaped unharmed.

In a separate incident in August, a 73-year-old woman died, likely from cardiac arrest, after a lift cable snapped in a Noida Sector 137 society, causing a free fall between floors without hitting the ground.
