An MLA from Asaduddin Owaisi-led political party All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has been booked under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act for allegedly insulting a woman politician with casteist slurs.
The FIR against Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala (number 142/2020) has been filed at Chaderghat police station in Hyderabad, Telangana.
Though it was filed on 9 May, it has come in the public eye only now.
The complaint was filed by Bangaru Shruthi, daughter of former BJP national president Bangaru Laxman, who was also known as a Dalit leader.
The FIR was filed three days after Balala’s close aide, Mohammad Shakeel, was booked for allegedly raping a minor Dalit girl in the area.
In fact, it’s related to the rape case.
As per the complaint given by Shruthi, she and Balala both visited the colony of the rape survivor on 7 May — a day after Shakeel was booked for the alleged crime.
They visited at different times. Later, Shruthi saw a video posted by a Facebook page made in Balala’s name. In the video, Balala was seen asked an accomplice who was the other person to have visited the area and, when he heard Shruthi’s name, he said, “Third class waley, chor log”.
Shruthi said in her complaint that she was surprised and pained by the remark, as she felt it was against her caste (Madiga, a scheduled caste) as it is well-known that her father was a Dalit leader.
“The video is got viral in social media and my community feelings are deeply hurt due to the humiliating and insulting words used by Ahmed Balala against me (sic),” the complaint says.
Balala has been booked under IPC Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), and section 3(1)(r) of SC/ST Act.
His aide, Shakeel, was earlier booked by Chanderghat police under IPC sections 448, 376 and 506 and under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) and SC/ST Prevention from Atrocities Acts.
The FIR (number 118/2010) was registered on the basis of a complaint given by the survivor’s cousin.
The alleged crime took place on the intervening night of 5 and 6 May.
