Former president of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Andhra Pradesh unit Kanna Lakshminarayana is all set to join the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
Lakshminarayana, an MLA for five terms and a cabinet minister in state’s Congress government between 2004 to 2014, is going to join TDP tomorrow (23 February) in the presence of party chief N Chandrababu Naidu.
He belongs to the numerically strong kapu community and worked as chief of BJP in AP from 2018 to 2020.
According to a report by The New Indian Express, Lakshminarayana got assurance from TDP about contesting from Guntur West Assembly seat which he won in 2009 as a Congress candidate.
With a divided opposition in AP with actor turned politician Pawan Kalyan led Jana Sena and former CM Chandrababu Naidu led TDP vying for opposition votes, Kanna Lakshminarayana choosing TDP ahead of assembly elections scheduled to be held in mid 2024 may boost the image of Naidu led party.
In the 2019 elections, TDP won just 23 out of 175 seats in AP assembly but it garnered 39 per cent vote share.
