The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government on Tuesday (25 April) suspended Dr Akhlaq Ahmed, brother-in-law of the notorious, now deceased, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed.

Dr Ahmed, a serving government doctor in Meerut, has been accused of providing shelter to Atiq's aide Guddu Muslim, who is wanted by Prayagraj police in connection with the daylight killing of lawyer Umesh Pal and two police guards on 24 February.

Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak said Dr Ahmed's conduct has tarnished the image of the state government and earned his department a bad name.

Pathak added that Dr Ahmed was engaged in unethical activities, which are in violation of the Government Service Conduct Rules.

An FIR has been lodged against Dr Ahmed, alleging that he had given refuge to Guddu, who is still on the run.

According to the CCTV footage obtained from Dr Ahmed's home, Guddu visited their house after the murders.

The UP STF arrested Dr Ahmed three weeks ago, and he has been suspended temporarily from his position as a government doctor.
