Consider Leaving It To Parliament, Centre Tells SC On Same-Sex Marriage Pleas

The Centre urged the Supreme Court to let Parliament address the questions raised in the pleas for legalising same-sex marriage.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, told the Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud that the court is addressing a "very complex subject" with a "profound social impact."

"The real question is who would take a call on what constitutes marriage and between whom," Mehta said on day five of the hearing.

During proceedings, he informed the bench consisting of Justices S K Kaul, S R Bhat, Hima Kohli, and P S Narasimha, in addition to the Chief Justice, that the impact of the decision would require discussion in society as well as in state legislatures, given the potential ramifications on multiple statutes.

Hearing in the matter has ended for the day. The court will continue on Thursday (27 April).
