The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has come under attack for deciding to hold Udhayanidhi Stalin’s swearing in ceremony during an auspicious time according to the Tamil Hindu calendar.

Udhayanidhi is set to be sworn in as a minister in the Tamil Nadu cabinet at 9.30am on 14 December. The chosen time falls between the auspicious time of 9.15am to 10.15am and is also the day of the sacred-bath ceremony of Lord Vishnu at the Parthasarathy Temple, situated in his constituency of Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni.

14 December is also the penultimate day of the Tamil month of Karthigai, which is an auspicious month. The next month of Margazhi is considered inauspicious for starting any kind of new work.

DMK critics questioned the party’s double standards. They asked as to how could a party, that consistently terms Hindu rituals and beliefs as irrational and superstitious, select an auspicious time when it comes to the oath-taking ceremony of Udhayanidhi.

While Chief Minister MK Stalin has said that he is an atheist, his wife Durga Stalin is known to be a practicing Hindu who regularly goes to temples.

According to social media users, Durga might have had a hand in the selection of the time of swearing-in.

Durga Stalin is recently in the eye of a storm due to a viral video, which shows her being shielded from rain using an umbrella reserved for the deity of the Thyagarajaswamy temple.
