As tension grew in the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi alliance due to Rahul Gandhi's remarks on V D Savarkar, Sharad Pawar intervened to mediate the situation by conveying Shiv Sena's concerns to the Congress leadership.
Congress has reportedly agreed to soften its criticism of Savarkar, causing discomfort among its Maharashtra alliance partners, according to Opposition leaders.
During an Opposition leaders meeting hosted by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Pawar brought up the issue and emphasised that attacking Savarkar, who is respected in Maharashtra, will not be beneficial for the opposition alliance in the state, according to two meeting attendees who spoke to PTI.
Along with Opposition leaders, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi also attended the meeting.
Pawar clarified to Rahul Gandhi that Savarkar was not part of the RSS and that the opposition's real battle was against PM Modi and the BJP.
Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray had condemned Gandhi's criticism of Savarkar, warning that his party would not tolerate any disrespect towards V D Savarkar.
Thackeray's Shiv Sena faction protested against Gandhi by skipping Kharge's meeting due to his remarks against Savarkar.
