The Trinamool Congress, whose leadership had hitherto maintained a cautious silence regarding the BJP's allegations against MP Mahua Moitra for allegedly accepting cash to pose questions in Parliament, has now officially distanced itself from the embattled parliamentarian.

Kunal Ghosh, the spokesperson for the Trinamool Congress (TMC), made it clear that the party was refraining from making any statements about the allegations.

He asserted that only Mahua Moitra, the target of the accusations, was in a position to comment on the issue, emphasising that the party itself had no comments to offer at this juncture.

TMC's decision to disassociate itself from the Krishnanagar MP does not come as a surprise, as Mahua Moitra, while popular in Delhi's political circles, lacks significant influence within the party's organisational structure.

Despite serving as an MLA from Karimpur in Nadia from 2016 to 2019, she never attained a ministerial post in the state government or held a key position within the party.

Furthermore, a report from The Hindu suggests that the MP's criticism of the Adani Group has not been well-received by the TMC leadership.

The TMC-led government in West Bengal is moving forward with the development of the Tajpur port by the Adani Group, including a deep-sea port project.

The deep-sea port, located around 170 kilometres from Kolkata, is expected to require a significant investment of Rs 15,000 crore and create numerous job opportunities, both directly and indirectly.

TMC's consistent practice of avoiding public commentary on allegations of personal misconduct against its leaders has become evident in this instance, just as it has with previous accusations against other party members.

BJP and other political figures have seized on this silence, highlighting the apparent selectivity in the TMC's responses, particularly in cases involving high-profile members of the party.

This dynamic has led to accusations that the TMC leadership only comes to the defence of specific individuals, leaving others to fend for themselves in the face of allegations.
