Amidst demands for a separate administration by a certain group of MLAs from Manipur for the Kuki, Hmar and Zomi tribes, Manipur Chief Ministers, N Biren Singh, told reporters on Monday (15 May) that there would be no splitting of the northeastern state.
This comes after his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi when Centre gave assurance that there would be no compromise on the integrity of the state of Manipur.
Notably, 10 Manipur MLAs from the Kuki tribe (including seven from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party) had issued a joint statement on Friday (12 May) seeking separate administration under the
Constitution for areas where the Kuki, Hmar and Zomi communities reside.
The Manipur CM further conveyed that Home Minister Amit Shah had expressed grief at the violence and loss of lives in the state, with the restoration of peace and normalcy and action against perpetrators being the priority.
Singh also said that the government would act against militant groups under the so-called “SoO” or Suspension of Operations agreement under the terms of which they are not expected to bear arms.
This comes as the state recovers from the widespread violence that had engulfed it, and the evacuation drives being carried out by the Army for those stranded.
