Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been cleared by the Lok Sabha secretariat to return to Parliament.
This development comes just days after the Supreme Court stayed his conviction in a 2019 criminal defamation case related to his remarks on the 'Modi' surname.
Following the news of Gandhi's return to the Lok Sabha, MPs from the Opposition's INDIA bloc expressed their joy by shouting slogans. As a result, the lower house was adjourned for an hour until noon.
At 11 am, Congress MPs stood up and chanted slogans in support of Rahul Gandhi. BJP MPs attempted to drown out the chants, but Union Ministers Anurag Thakur and Pralhad Joshi urged them to sit down.
Speaker Om Birla proceeded with the Question Hour, while Congress and DMK MPs remained standing near their seats. No Opposition MP went to the Well of the House.
Opposition leaders defiantly chanted slogans of "Garv se bolo INDIA, paschim bolo India, purv bolo India" in the House.
Despite the speaker's warning against disrupting the proceedings, they refused to listen and instead continued with their slogans. The speaker urged them to focus on the Question Hour, but their refusal persisted.
On 23 March, Rahul Gandhi faced disqualification as a Member of Parliament (MP) due to his conviction in a defamation case by a Gujarat court. He was sentenced to two years in jail. It rendered him ineligible to continue serving as an MP.
