MLAs of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its allies like the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) started protesting and raising slogans saying 'hail Tamil Nadu' as soon as Governor RN Ravi started his address to the opening session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly today (9 January).

The slogans hailing Tamil Nadu were raised in protest against Ravi's recent remarks saying that it would be more appropriate to call the state as 'Tamizhagam' (also written as 'Tamilakam').

After raising slogans, the MLAs belonging to the Congress, VCK, MDMK and the two Left parties staged a walk out.

The ruling DMK has been at loggerheads with the Governor over a number of issues like his remarks on Thirukkural and Sanatana Dharma. It also says that the Governor is responsible for the deaths caused by online rummy because he has not signed a bill banning such online games.

Last November, it had submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu asking her to remove Ravi from the post of Governor, due to his 'anti-constitutional' remarks.
