Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai visited some of the towns that suffered the most during the recent floods in Tamil Nadu caused by a depression in Bay of Bengal.
Along with the other BJP office-bearers, he interacted with the people to understand their requirements and distributed relief materials. Among the towns visited were Achalpuram, Nallur, Kodakaramoolai, Vetangudi, Tirumullaivasal, Neppathur, Thiruvengadu and Chinnaperundottam in Mayiladuthurai district.
Thousands of acres of paddy crop have been submerged in the district. Sirkazhi, one of the well known places in the district, famous for its Sattainathar Shiva temple received a record 44 cm of rainfall in a single day.
Annamalai said that he was pained to see that floodwater had entered the houses due to the poor condition of irrigation works and canals.
He demanded that the affected farmers should immediately be given a compensation of Rs 30,000 per acre and adequate measures be taken by the government so that they return to their normal life as soon as possible.
Chief Minister MK Stalin who visited the district earlier this week had said that the inhabitants would be compensated adequately but he did not specify the amount of compensation.
