The five-member committee appointed by the Uttarakhand government to prepare a draft of the Uniform Civil Code is likely to submit its report soon.
The committee, headed by retired Supreme Court justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, had earlier on 30 June announced that the drafting of the UCC report has been completed and now the draft will be printed and submitted to the state government.
"It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that the drafting of the proposed Uniform Civil Code of Uttarakhand is now complete. The report of the expert committee along with the draft will be printed and submitted to the Government of Uttarakhand," Justice Desai had said last week.
The panel has now started the printing process and the draft UCC report could be submitted to the state government by next week, Amar Ujala reported citing sources.
After receiving the report, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami led state government will legally verify the report before implementing it.
"We will bring it soon, without any inordinate delay. However, we will get it legally verified and not do anything in a hurry so as to ensure there are no shortcomings," Dhami was quoted as saying by Times of India.
Dhami has also said that if need arises, a special session of the state Assembly will be called to implement the UCC.
